The BEST OF PITTSBURGH issue of the Pittsburgh City Paper is always an entertaining and often enlightening read. And there are pictures! This year, for the mid-October publication, I was invited to be in several pictures throughout the paper, and I put together a string of videos (shot on my iPhone) about the photo shoots with photographer Heather Mull and City Paper Art Director Lisa Cunningham. Some goofy stuff.
We're working on a new program for PBS that we call SOME REALLY GREAT BAKERIES. In late September we stopped in Syracuse, New York, to see the bread-baking traditions at Columbus Bakery. After we shot interviews and b-roll with our big Sony HDCam camera, our cameraman Frank Caloiero set up some of these "gimmick" shots with the tiny GoPro camera. This all-GoPro preview clip was edited and voiced in the van while traveling east on I-90.
A 1.5K and a 5k run around the Pittsburgh neighborhood known as Regent Square. Some goofy Saturday morning video. And a cool song from The New Mingle, one of the bands playing along the race course.
In the summer of 2014, people across America poured ice water on their heads to help raise awareness of the fight against ALS (Lou Gehrig's Disease). It helps to send a contribution after or in appreciation of the dowsing: web.alsa.org/icebucketchallenge
It's now an annual contest to see which places on the North Side of Pittsburgh serve great sandwiches! Lots to taste and see! Two years ago we did a whole half-hour show about the event, and you can watch that here. I did this story as a challenge to myself: could I shoot and edit the whole thing on my iPhone? Yes. (Thanks to the Pinnacle Studio app!)
Every year there's a local gathering of people who love to buy and sell cool old stuff. It's called the Pittsburgh Vintage Mixer, and on April 12, 2014, I went to check out what was for sale. Held this year at the Heinz History Center, the Vintage Mixer was a chance to browse and purchase some of the most unusual and classic merchandise anywhere around here.
On a beautiful February Saturday in 2014, I wandered around the South Side sampling soups and learning all that I could. The Ginger Carrot Bisque from the Smiling Moose won the competition as Best Soup. The Hungry Hungry Hunky Goulash (with the fried pierogie on top) from the Pub Chip Shop came in second!
On a beautiful day in October, I got to sample and judge lots of different pies at the restaurant called Salt in Garfield. Chef Kevin Sousa put together this tasty event to help benefit the Garfield Community Farm.
It's time for A CHRISTMAS STORY at the Arcade Comedy Theater, and while I'm the Narrator for this Live Read of the film script, I am surrounded by lots of really energetic and talented actors including Curt Wooton who plays Pittsburgh Dad in the popular web series. It's time for the first rehearsal.
One of the joys of working in a TV station is that people want to see the place. And one morning I was asked to give a tour to some bright and lively third graders from Winchester Thurston North school. I didn't get all the video I expected, but I had a good time. Smart kids.
An old flea-market find lets us make titles with dancing letters. Thanks to the Hewitt Home Movie Titler kit!
It was a perfect day for a neighborhood party in September 2013. Who knew that my neighbors made homemade wine every year? A good time, good food, good people. And some original music!
