Budapest on the Bluff: Dominantly Dohnanyi At 17, Dohnányi was championed by Johannes Brahms, but his tuneful, brilliant and heart-on-sleeve Romanticism was soon considered old-fashioned. However, today's audiences appreciate Dohnányi's sincerity, skill and emotionalism. The PSO's Gretchen Van Hoesen will be featured in his Harp Concertino. Bartók's Contrasts were commissioned by jazz clarinetist Benny Goodman. Its finale is a "Hungarian hoe-down," complete with a deliberately mistuned violin. 11/26/2012
Angels in America, Part 1: Millennium Approaches Jed Allen Harris directs Tony Kushner's Angels in America, a Pulitzer Prize and Tony Award winning masterpiece that confronts the political and social failures surrounding the HIV/AIDS epidemic in 1980s New York City. This epic story transcends the political moment by using humor, the supernatural and heartbreaking realism; wrestling with universal themes of love, loss and responsibility.
