The Musical Conquest of the New World
When it came to music in the Americas, the British and Spanish imperial campaigns spread beauty, not destruction. Mexican and South American cathedral archives contain many jewels composed in the Spaniish late Renaissance style of Morales and Victoria. Choral music written in North America was much more tied to the British cathedral tradition. Composers such as Leo Sowerby and Healey Willan developed a distinctively American style without fully relinquishing their "old country" roots.

Noah Bendix-Balgley with David Allen Wehr
PCMS presents the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra's new concertmaster, Noah Bendix-Balgley, in recital.  Mr. Bendix-Balgley won 1st prize at the Vibrarte International Music Competition and the International Violin Competition "Andrea Postacchini." He'll be accompanied by pianist David Allen Wehr who holds the Jack W. Geltz Distinguished Piano Chair at Duquesne University and who has collected numerous prestigious awards throughout his performing career.

Mozart & Bartok
Conducting favorite Rafael Frühbeck de Burgos returns. Mozart's Serenade No. 6 is a delightful orchestration for two small ensembles. Powerhouse pianist, Shai Wosner makes his PSO debut with Mozart's Concerto No. 15. Bartók's Concerto for Orchestra is one of the composer's most popular works, in which each section of instruments plays a virtuosic role.
