Miss Julie
During the course of a midsummer night in the post-Civil War South, Miss Julie, the young daughter of a plantation owner, seeks to escape her cramped uptight life by trying to seduce one of her father's former slaves. What begins as a flirtatious grappling for power between the two quickly escalates into a sexual relationship which has dark consequences. This new adaptation by Mark Clayton Southers mixes race into the dangerous cocktail of class and gender politics that Strindberg exploded onstage, restoring the sense of shock and outrage with which audiences greeted the play's original premiere. Andrew Paul directs.
