WQED Multimedia's Education Department has dedicated itself to improving the lives of our region's residents though programs designed to address regional issues such as early literacy, diversity, obesity and workforce development. In the past year, these programs have enhanced the lives of more than 1,000 child-care providers, 15,000 children, 200 teachers and 1,300 parents in southwestern Pennsylvania. We have also distributed thousands of children's books, family literacy workbooks and educational packets to families across the region.
For more than three years, the Education Department has been conducting training in elementary schools throughout the Greater Pittsburgh area. What has become clear to us through our experiences and in focus groups with regional elementary school teachers is that there is a defined need for in-school student activities that focus on character education and developing healthy attitudes about learning and achieving.
