Students participate in engineering challenges at Design Lives Here

About the Program

Design Lives Here is a semester-long engineering initiative that equips teachers and students to participate in engineering activities within their school or afterschool program. Professional engineers serve as mentors to students throughout the year. Schools who participate are diverse – public, parochial and private – and have the option of making this part of their school day or an extended program. Each spring, all the participants come together for a day of engineering challenges, grouped in new teams to compete for prizes. Design Lives Here activities are inspired by the popular PBS KIDS program and website, Design Squad Nation.

The 2016-2017 Design Lives Here initiative is a project of WQED Multimedia, with major underwriting by PPG, and additional support from ANSYSAmerican BridgeDaedalus, and Founding Partner the Engineers Society of Western PA.

Our Impact

Design Lives Here has engaged more than 1,750 students since 2010. Read more about the project in this KDKA article!

Our Pilot

The project was piloted during the 2009-2010 school year; educators from more than 30 schools received training, representing an educational impact on approximately 600 students. Five schools were invited to participate in a special engineering event held in May 2010, which was attended by 70 students in grades five through 11. In 2013, WQED held a public “Invention Convention” at Inventionland, introducing families to the same challenges activities and engineering fun as our school-based program.
