The portrait of my dad was sent to my mother in 1944 and later it came to me. I happened to post it on Facebook this Memorial Day, not knowing the significance of the artist - until a cousin told me about seeing the PBS special about Elizabeth Black. I watched the program with tears in my eyes. These men were far from home, and she gave them attention in such a special way during tough, scary times. I found it remarkable how she could very quickly capture an exact likeness of his facial features. What a wonderful gift she gave many of the troops. And what WQED and Elizabeth's son have done is a gift to the nation! --- Gail Blalock Iddings, Hickory, North Carolina, July 9, 2021.
