New Year's Eve: As Time Goes By

The celebration features a cocktail reception in the Hall of Sculpture; dinner in the elegant Music Hall Foyer; operatic entertainment drawn from the Viennese and American musical theater traditions featuring the company's Resident Artists with the Pittsburgh Opera Orchestra, dances by Attack Theatre, a party with desserts and social dancing to the music of Protege, and a champagne toast at midnight.

Handel's Rodelinda

In one of Handel's most popular operas, Queen Rodelinda endures grief, terror, and political upheaval, but remains steadfastly loyal as she waits - and works - to bring her exiled husband home. Starring the company's Resident Artists, with Jasmine Muhammad as Rodelinda and Corrie Stallings as Bertarido. Crystal Manich (Aida, 2013) directs; Baroque specialist Michael Beattie (Rinaldo, 2011) conducts the Chatham Baroque orchestra.

Fairouz's Sumeida's Song

Sumeida's Song is 60 minutes of gripping drama about a mother's hopes for her son, and her diabolical plan for revenge that goes so terribly wrong. Composed by Mohammed Fairouz at age 22, Sumeida's Song earned an excellent review from the New York Times for its 2013 premiere. Resident Artist Adelaide Boedecker is the mother Mabrouka; Laurel Semerdjian is her sister Asakir; Alex DeSocio is the son. Glenn Lewis conducts.

Bizet's Carmen

The character Carmen is wildly beautiful, passionate, and elusive. The opera Carmen from the young Georges Bizet has splashy arias and ensembles, and a sensational ending -- presented on a grand, traditional set. The sizzling Israeli mezzo-soprano Rinat Shaham (Don Giovanni, 2001) returns as Carmen, with rising tenor A. J. Glueckert as Carmen's jealous suitor Don Jose, and Morgan Smith as the bullfighter Escamillo. Antony Walker conducts.

Donizetti's Daughter of the Regiment

Sung in English. Fun-loving, tomboyish Marie meets Tonio in a madcap romance with show-stopping arias for both lead singers. Tenor Lawrence Brownlee stars as Tonio, singing the famous nine high Cs in "Ah, my friends (Ah, mes amis)," alongside Lisette Oropesa (Abduction from the Seraglio, 2011) as Marie. Joyce Castle is the Marquise of Berkenfeld, and Kevin Glavin is the old soldier Sulpice. Antony Walker conducts.
