Mercy Train
Presented by: Microscopic Opera Company
Microscopic Opera stages the world premiere of Mercy Train by Pittsburgh's Douglas Levine (music) and Julie Tosh (libretto). The setting of this chamber opera for families alternates between two trains: an orphan train circa 1925, and a contemporary New York City subway car. Orphan trains — often called mercy trains — transported New York's homeless children to adopted homes in the Midwest from 1853 until the late 1920's.
