Cellist Hampton Mallory was born in Hong Kong, and lived for half of his childhood in Japan and Taiwan. Following graduation from Harvard College, he won a Fulbright Foreign Grant for a year's study with Maurice Gendron in Paris. Upon returning to the United States, he studied with David Soyer at the Curtis Institute of Music. Mr. Mallory has participated at the Aspen and Marlboro music festivals. He joined the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra cello section in 1978 after several years as a free-lance artist in Philadelphia.
An active participant in many committees of the orchestra, he enjoys private teaching and chamber music. In his spare time he can frequently be found in the garden. He is married to Lauren Scott Mallory, also a cellist in the PSO, and they have two grown children.
