THINK! Poverty in Western Pennsylvania
Poverty is a multifaceted social problem that affects billions of people worldwide. Our focus is on the Pittsburgh region in this third Think! initiative. Working with the Art of Democracy and a diverse group of regional community partners directly involved in combating various elements of poverty, we have determined that our discussion of poverty must ask the following questions:
- HOW CAN SYSTEMS & SERVICE PROVIDERS CHANGE TO REMOVE THE STIGMA AND REVEAL THE TRUE NATURE OF POVERTY?
- IF POVERTY IS A SYSTEMIC PROBLEM THAT CAN BE SOLVED, HOW CAN WE CONTRIBUTE TO THE SOLUTION?
- HOW CAN WE CREATE COALITIONS TO GENERATE POLITICAL AND SOCIAL MOVEMENTS TO ADDRESS POVERTY?
From its beginnings involving community organizational input, the initiative gathered momentum, moving into social media, online forums, and community gatherings, the project culminated in a broadcast town hall meeting.

This sequel to the documentary "Portraits for the Home Front" chronicles WQED's efforts to find homes for 100 of those sketches. Through detective work and the help of volunteer researchers producer David Solomon tracks down soldiers or their survivors from Philadelphia to San Francisco.

In the tradition of the Horizons series on diversity, musicians representing the region’s varied musical traditions perform songs that celebrate the holiday season. Groups include CoroLatino Americano, the Afro American Music Institute Boys Choir, Gabrielle and Mr. DeVilla, (Filipino folk music), The Bastard Bearded Irishmen, an Irish rock band and the Asian-influenced jazz ensemble Silk Sound.

WQED’s Portrayal & Perception documentary series focuses on African American men and boys in positive roles. Young African American men score below their counterparts in other racial and ethnic groups when it comes to graduation rates, literacy rates and college preparedness. Yet sometimes it is the success story that inspires other young people, and encourages community leaders to work for change. The tenth documentary in the series focuses on teenagers excelling in school, volunteering as mentors and working hard to make a difference among their peers.
